Job roles

INTRO

When I think about three potential roles within the gaming industry which I would possibly like to do in the future I would probably say 3D modelling and animation, VFX artist or a Programmer. For 3D modelling and animation the job role would entail the skills to create and animate 3D objects for games.

3D MODELIST AND ANIMATOR

For a 3D modelist and animator the job role would require someone who can create 3D models and animate them.

A skill that is required would be to have a vast amount of knowledge and skill to use a variety of tools in programmes such as Maya, 3ds MAX, Mudbox and a variety of other autodesk products including knowledge about programmes that I may of yet not worked with. Another key skill I would need is team work.

I might be employed by showing off what I can do. The best way to show of what I can do is by showing my portfolio of all my previous work to the employer. I might also be employed due to some of the qualifications that I have received over the years of my time spent in education.

My career might progress by working in different industries such as the film industry or becoming the leader of a game development team over time. My career may even progress so far  that I might become an employer myself for my own created games such as indie games.

VFX ARTIST

For a VFX artist the job role would entail the skills to be able to create special effects for footage or for something else.

The skills that would be required are a vast knowledge and skills when using tools in programmes such as After effects.

Just like the 3D modelling I might be employed by showing the work that I have done in the past by showing off a portfolio of all my work.

My career might progress to the flim industry where I can use my VFX skills in future upcoming films.

PROGRAMMER

For a programmer in the gaming industry the job would entail a person who can write a code for the game so that the game can operate.

A skill that is needed for this is the knowledge of various computer programming language syntax’s.

I might be employed by showing programmes or all small games that I have created by using a certain computer language such as c++.

My  programming career in the game industry could lead to me becoming the Lead Programmer  who checks the code for games .

VARIATIONS OF  JOB EMPLOYMENT

Over my time at Nescot I also learnt about different types of employment. The four different types of job employments are.

  • Self employment
  • Freelancing
  • Short term employed contracts
    and finally
  • Full time employed contracts

By learning about these different types of job employment I learnt about each of their strengths and weaknesses. E.G.

SELF EMPLOYMENT

Of course one huge advantage for self employment is that you are your own boss and you can work exactly how you want to. However one huge disadvantage to self employment is that you have to take care of all the sources of finance for your business.

FREELANCE

A very huge advantage to freelance work is the fact that you can choose when you want to work and choose your own hours. A disadvantage would be the fact that your income and your work load are both unstable and very inconsistent.

SHORT TERM EMPLOYMENT

A huge advantage to short term employed contracts is that it you will still get payed while looking for the actual main job you want to take up as a career in the future. An example of this is the fact that I am choosing to work at Sainsburys in the summer holidays while looking for an actual job in the gaming industry. A disadvantage would be the fact that because it’s a short term employed contract you won’t be able to keep the job for a long time.

FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT

Full time employed contracts have some advantages like the fact that you earn a salary and not a wage meaning you know the exact amount of income that you should be receiving from your job either monthly or annually. However one huge disadvantage is the fact that working full time a lot can be very stressful and very tiring.
